Keeping two words together on a line in Microsoft Word

Here’s a quick tip I learned today from my wife Tamara. If you’re typing along in Microsoft Word and you end up with two words split between two lines, you can use this tip to make sure those two words stay together on a single line. Here’s how that works…

In this example, the two words “be together” ended up getting split between two lines because I just used a simple space between the words. Word decided where to do the line split:

But here, instead of a regular space between the two words, I used the combination of CTRL-SHIFT-SPACE to separate the words. Word reads that as a requirement that those two words should stay together on a single line, and will do the line split accordingly:

By turning on the formatting marks, you can see that the regular dot between words is replaced with a elevated circle between the two words, denoting that those words must stay together on a single line:

This is a great tip if you have a line break that doesn’t make your content easy to understand.
