Changing the header layout in your SharePoint Online site

Microsoft recently rolled out some changes that allow you some flexibility in the header layout of your SharePoint Online site. These changes give you the option to conserve space or add more color and flair to your site header. Here’s how it works…

If you are a site owner or site administrator, click on the Settings icon and select Change the look:

Under Change the look, select Header:

By default, your site will use the Standard layout, but you have the option to change that to Minimal, Compact, or Extended:

In the Minimal layout, the site header is a single narrow line that shows the site name and a strip of navigation options:

The Compact layout is similar to Minimal, but the font is larger and there’s a bit more white space:

The most dramatic change is the Extended layout. You have the option to select a background image for the header. Click on the Upload option to select an image:

It adds the image to your header and gives you the option to change the focal point. The site logo and name overlays the image, and the navigation options show up under the image:

In all cases, make sure to click Save at the bottom of the screen to save your changes.
