GPT-5 is now the default model for Microsoft Copilot

For the last few months, when you are in Copilot Chat you’ve been asked if you want to try the GPT-5 model for your Copilot interactions. When you clicked the button, Copilot would look at your question and decide whether a quick response or a reasoning response would be best. Now you have the ability to expressly determine which type of interaction you want. Here’s what that looks like…

The Try GPT-5 button has been replaced with the Auto button. When clicked, you get three different options for how to use GPT-5. Auto makes the determination for Quick response or Think deeper automatically based on your question. You can also specifically select Quick response (answers right away) or Think deeper (Thinks longer for better answers) depending on what makes the most sense for your needs:

When you first go to the Copilot Chat home page, it will default to Auto. If you change the setting, it will retain your selection until the page is refreshed or you open the page again.
